Birth Control

Various methods and medications used to prevent pregnancy, such as oral contraceptives, condoms, and intrauterine devices.

Birth Control: An Overview

Birth control, also known as contraception, is any method or device used to prevent pregnancy. Birth control can help people plan when they want to have children, reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and improve their health and well-being. According to Wikipedia, most of the countries in Africa have some of the lowest rates of contraceptive use; highest maternal, infant, and child mortality rates; and highest fertility rates.

Approximately 30% of all women use birth control, although over half of all African women would use birth control if it were available.

Types of Birth Control

There are many types of birth control available, and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most common forms of birth control are:

  • Hormonal methods: These include pills, patches, rings, injections, implants, and intrauterine devices (IUDs) that release hormones to stop ovulation or make it harder for sperm to reach the egg. Hormonal methods are very effective at preventing pregnancy, but they may cause side effects such as bleeding, mood changes, weight gain, acne, and headaches. Some hormonal methods also have health benefits, such as reducing menstrual cramps, acne, and the risk of certain cancers.
  • Barrier methods: These include male and female condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, and sponges that create a physical or chemical barrier between the sperm and the egg. Barrier methods are effective at preventing both pregnancy and STIs, but they must be used correctly and consistently every time you have sex. Some people may be allergic to latex or spermicide or find barrier methods uncomfortable or inconvenient.
  • Natural methods: These include fertility awareness methods (FAMs), withdrawal (pull-out method), breastfeeding as birth control, and abstinence or outercourse. Natural methods rely on tracking your menstrual cycle, avoiding sex or using other forms of stimulation during your fertile days, or not having vaginal intercourse at all. Natural methods are safe and inexpensive, but they require a lot of self-awareness, communication, and discipline. They are also less effective than other methods of preventing pregnancy.
  • Permanent methods: These include sterilization procedures such as tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men. Permanent methods are very effective at preventing pregnancy, but they are irreversible and require surgery. They are suitable for people who are sure they do not want to have children in the future.
